Ground House Sita, a thatched house half hidden among the trees and greenery of its garden

Our sixth house, Sita, is our ground house, designed for families with small children and for anyone who would rather stay close to the earth than up in the trees. It sleeps five across several levels: the king-size bed sits on the highest level, two Zanzibari beds are a few steps below, and a day bed waits on the porch.

Everything you need is inside the house: the toilet, the sink, a shower open to the sky, and a sunken mosaic bath that doubles as a small pool for children. Sita opens onto a circular garden that runs down to the mangroves, where fireflies light up the night. It is close to the bar and restaurant, yet completely private, screened by planted hedges and floor-to-ceiling curtains: space and seclusion for a young family.

Like every house at Chole Mjini, Sita was built by hand by Chole craftsmen (“fundis”) using traditional hand tools, from locally sourced wood, makuti roofing, reed mats and coconut rope.
