Our fourth house, Nne, is one of our most popular, and for good reason. It sleeps three: two in the king-size bed and one in a single bed upstairs. It was the first of our three houses with an upstairs “tea house”: an elevated room open to the breeze on every side, a 19th-century Stone Town idea, with 360-degree views and spectacular sunsets. Nne is similar to Saba, our seventh house, but it has its own baobab and looks out to the open ocean.

Nne also has a private sundeck with its own plunge pool, looking over the mangroves and Chole Bay. The open-air shower is on the deck too, right by the pool. At night the fireflies might come to visit while you shower or lie out under the stars. Everything is up in the treehouse, including the toilet, two sinks and shower, so you never have to come down to the ground unless you want to.

Like every house at Chole Mjini, Nne was built by hand by Chole craftsmen (“fundis”) using traditional hand tools, from locally sourced wood, makuti roofing, reed mats and coconut rope, with no concrete.
