A Day at Chole Mjini
Each day at Chole Mjini in the Mafia Island Marine Park unfolds naturally with the rhythm of the island. Activities are shaped by the weather, tides, and the interests of our guests, so no two days are exactly the same. The schedule shared here is simply an example of how a day might typically flow. Depending on conditions and personal preferences, the team tailors each day to suit your pace and the experiences you would most enjoy.
Wake up above the treetops
The first thing you'll hear isn't an alarm clock. It's birdsong drifting through the baobab trees, the gentle movement of leaves and the sound of the Indian Ocean below. Soon after, a woven basket is hoisted to your front door with your morning coffee or tea. No rush, just a slow beginning to the day.
Breakfast with birdsong as background music
Breakfast is served overlooking the turquoise waters of Mafia Island Marine Park, framed by our thriving tropical gardens. Fresh tropical fruit, homemade bread, eggs cooked to order, fresh juices and Tanzanian coffee make for an unhurried start to the day. By now, today's adventure has already been planned with the team over dinner the night before, taking into account the tides, weather and your interests. So all that's left to do is savour breakfast and look forward to the day ahead.
Follow the tides
Depending on the tides and weather, you might find yourself gliding through Chole Island's mangrove channels by paddleboard, setting off by boat to dive or snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Mafia Island Marine Park, or heading to a secluded sandbank where the Indian Ocean stretches in every direction. Others choose a slower pace: wandering through the ancient Swahili ruins on our own Chole Island, reading on their treehouse sundeck, or simply listening to the birds and watching the tides reshape the shoreline.
Lunch
Lunch is served back at the lodge, or packed to enjoy on the boat if you're spending the afternoon exploring the reefs. Freshly caught fish, seasonal ingredients and flavours inspired by the Swahili coast are at the heart of every meal.
Dive beneath the surface
The reefs of Chole bay in the Mafia Island Marine Park are among East Africa's finest. Whether you're snorkelling with our team or diving with our trusted partner Mafia Island Diving, or joining Ropes of Hope to witness coral restoration firsthand, every trip offers something different. Colourful reef fish, turtles, rays, nudibranchs and thriving coral gardens all remind you why these waters are so worth protecting. Many guests say that seeing coral restoration in action becomes one of the most meaningful experiences of their stay.
A shower with a view
Back at your treehouse, strike a match. A gentle whoosh, warm water, open sky. Our outdoor showers are wonderfully simple and surprisingly luxurious. One of those small moments guests remember long after they leave. If you're staying in Tatu, Nne or Saba, perhaps it's time for a quiet dip in your private plunge pool before the evening begins.
Sundowners at The Red Herring bar
As the heat softens, guests naturally gather at The Red Herring bar & café for a cold beer, glass of wine, freshly made piña colada, fresh juice, soda or a gin and tonic. The conversation slows as the sun begins to set over Mafia Island, painting the sky in deep oranges and pinks.
Dinner beneath the stars
Dinner is never quite the same twice. One evening it might be served on the jetty beneath a sky full of stars. Another beneath the tamarind tree, or among the ancient ruins that have watched over Chole Island for centuries. Join the communal table to exchange stories with fellow travellers, sometimes even the owners, or choose a private dinner if you're celebrating something special. Meals often stretch long into the evening as strangers become friends over freshly caught seafood, candlelight and stories from around the world.
Tomorrow will look different
Some days begin before sunrise to swim respectfully alongside whale sharks during the season between October and March. Others end on an untouched sandbank, watching the tide erase your footprints, and then sailing in to the sunset on a traditional dhow boat. Between June and August, you may even witness turtle hatchlings making their first journey to the sea.
No matter when you visit, our team will tailor your stay around the tides, the seasons and the experiences that make Mafia Island so extraordinary. Start planning your stay
